Outward mindset–a must-have mentality of “being supportive to others” in this era

Have you ever been in a situation where you cannot communicate with someone because you will end up having a conflict with that person and it makes you frustrated and stressful? This kind of situation can happen every day both at home and workplace. Are you trying to quit your job because of someone or having an issue communicating with your family or having a problem understanding each other? In this article, the writer would like to introduce all of you to an interesting mentality extracted from a book so called “The Outward Mindset” that will help you handle the above-mentioned situation better. The outward mindset will help you look at other people with a new perspective who matter to us.

Arbinger Institute defines mindset as a mentality that causes behaviors and results. Mindset is divided in to an inward mindset and outward mindset. Inward mindset focuses on our personal goals and objectives without taking into consideration of other people’s value and capability. This makes us treat other people as “objects or some part of our obstacles or something that will help us achieving our goals.” People with an inward mindset are like those who lock themselves within a paper box. Thus, they can only see themselves inside the box. On the contrary, outward mindset is the ability to view and regard other people’s objectives as equally important as our own. The mindset helps us removing the paper box which allows us to see the outside world, while treating people around as “people” with interest upon their needs, objectives and reasons behind their behaviors. Outward-mindset people do not judge others based solely on their own perspective.

Outward mindset has been applied by many world-leading companies, such as Apple, Google, Nestle, Unilever, FedEX, Nike and so on. I would like to share with you an interesting story of Mr. Alan Mulally, former CEO of Ford Motor USA. He was the key person reviving Ford from a company suffering from a crisis of a 17-million US dollar deficit in 2006 to a profitable firm in 2009. Mr. Mulally started from calling a meeting among CEOs around the world in order to introduce a new way of reporting situation in their area of responsibility using colors. For instance, green means good, yellow means that the recovery is now in process, red refers to a crisis and blue indicates that something new is being created. Believe it or not, everybody shew up in the first meeting with diagrams full of green marks. It made Mr. Mulally wonder of how this could have happened when the company was, at the moment, experiencing a 17-million US dollar deficit. How could they fix this problem when they did not even know where the problem was? In the next two weeks, Mr. Mark Field, one of the CEOs, surprised everyone by demonstrating a diagram with red marks for the first time. His team found some issues remain unsolved which had been slowing down their production process and costing them a fortune. The meeting went silent all of the sudden and everyone thought that Mr. Field would certainly be fired. Oppositely, Mr. Mulally highly appreciated his courage for speaking the truth, while asking Mr. Field politely that “do you have anything we can help?” After that, Mr. Mulally invited everyone to help solving the issues raised by Mr. Field together. Those who had experience dealing with the issues before then contributed greatly by providing solutions and dispatching experts to help on the spot. In the next two weeks, Mr. Field’s diagram became yellow and eventually green in the following week. After that, Mr. Mulally began to see diagrams with a variety of colors more, not just the green ones illustrating good numbers. This new method helped Mr. Mulally figure out causes of the 17-million US dollar deficit which were later addressed by everyone involved and finally led their company out of the crisis.

One vital policy behind this success refers to a “One Ford” policy initiated by Mr. Mulally. Such policy encourages everyone in the company to focus primarily on organizational objectives based on a principle of “honor to serve” or treat everyone in the firm with honesty, respect and importance. Mr. Mulally always listened to all employees when they wanted to share new ideas or when they went on strike in order to help satisfying their needs and get the company to move on. He emphasized on promoting mutual understanding and viewpoint that would drive the entire organization towards shared goals, not personal goals of any particular individual.

In general, people would be too afraid to reveal the truth in order to protect themselves. As in the example, once people knew it was ok to show a red diagram, they started to expose the truth and helped each other fix any problem found. This makes us think that maybe leaders in the past paid less attention on their staff members. This forced them to better stay quiet or refrain from expressing thoughts. Story of Ford serves as a crucial example that a change in mindset from inward to outward is a key to overcome crisis.

Another story about a family of three with father, daughter and son. Despite hard work, the father would always find time to be with his children. He always drive his children to school, come home from work to play with them and put them to bed. One night, the daughter says to her father that “you love my brother more than me.” The father is shocked, but then asks to find out why his daughter thinks that way. She replies that “you do not play with me like you do with my brother.” He is still confuses, while responding that “I always play basketball with you, don’t I?” After that, he starts to realize that what he has been playing with his daughter is actually what he likes to do. Back to us, have we ever thought about other people’s feeling? Have we ever judge others? Have we ever given someone something that we think is useful without even asking if that person really needs it or not? Misunderstanding occurs because we only perceive thing from our own viewpoint. If we try to understand others more, try to be in their shoes, our decisions in the future might bear different results from before.

You might be in a family with a small child. You are a source of income for your family working outside and would like to rest when return home. However, your child keeps crying when you sleep. Will you feel annoyed and get mad at your wife? Why is she so slow in calming the baby? She must lazy from staying home all day. Does she expect me to get up and take care of the baby? These questions are common for most men. My point in raising this example is to ask you, instead of acting angrily against your wife, try to picture what she has been doing since waking up and how tire she could be after looking after your child the whole day. She has to do household chores, cook food for everyone and so on. Acting angrily towards your wife would only spur an unpleasant retaliation from her in return. If you treat people with understanding, look at them as “people,” you will share sympathy with them when problems arise and willing to help them solve the problems.

In summary, outward mindset or a mentality of looking into problems from other people’s viewpoint is crucial for us as we have to live with others in society, and cooperate with teams at work to achieve our common goals and objectives, while understanding, trusting and assisting each other. This applies to a family as well. Being able to understand, trust and support each other will help nurturing relationship in your family and make everyone happy. With this, you will be able to move forward gloriously and successfully.
