Human development is the top priority of Japanese companies

Speaking of business culture, American and Japanese administer their business in a completely different manner. American companies will emphasize on shareholders as their top priority since they are the ones providing funding making them always the first to be regarded, while customers and society will come in second, trading partners third and employees last. Only outstanding, qualified and effective staff members that American companies will try to keep as long as possible with decent salary, bonus and welfare as incentives. On the contrary, employees with low competency, education and sub-standard performance are more likely to get fired in the end. This is the organizational and working culture in the US.

On the other hand, Japanese firms will always look at their staff members and attach great importance on human capital first. Despite the advancement of culture, innovation and modern robotic technology, they will be controlled by human being eventually. Trading partners come in second for Japanese companies. If Japanese companies decide to partner with a particular business, they will trust, stay loyal and use products offer by the business in a long run without caring about services provided by other companies. At the same time, they will share knowledge through trainings with trading partners consistently in order to grow and move forward together. Customers and society will come in third, while shareholders last. Speaking of human development, most Japanese companies regardless of their size will always attach special attention on taking care and developing their staff members to guarantee their advancement, quality, work effectiveness, sense of responsibility and enthusiasm. For this reason, Japanese staff members will be provided with education often in order to uplift their qualification. Moreover, Japanese firms emphasize on giving compliments and concentrate more on team rather than individual performance. Even though that employee may lack competency, quickness and efficiency, Japanese companies will not fire him/her so easily. Instead, he/she will be given opportunities to attend both online and offline training courses with senior staff mentoring them throughout the development process until they eventually become effective by themselves.

Next, Teacher Zeng would like to raise one example of a company in OSAKA. This is a small firm that emphasizes on taking care and paying close attention on staff members just like raising children. We are talking about NAOMI Co., Ltd. which is a company producing small food packing machines. When we produce fruit juice, jam, milk, yogurt, sauce, dried food, liquid food and so on, it would consume a considerable amount of time to pack these food products using manual labor. To save time, it is wiser to use a food packing machine which is capable of packing food faster.

Before becoming the number one food packing machine producer in Japan and the company that regards their staff members as top priority, Ms. Yukie KOMAI had to get through the most expensive and painful life lesson taught by the founder and former President which was her father. Her father was a very conservative and hardheaded person who lacked administrative knowledge. He then regarded his employees as just working laborers when his ideas were always right. He would get frustrated every time staff members thought or acted out of the box. He would care only about his own benefit, more to him and less to employees. As a result, his company experienced deficit and staff resignation consistently. He did not act like that only at work, but at home as well. He was always strict with Ms. Yukie KOMAI by trying to force her to stay in his plan and would always get frustrated, while blaming her for any mistake she made. In her childhood, she received more complaints than compliments. When Ms. Yukie KOMAI got married with 2 children, a daughter and a son. She also raised her children the way she was raised by forcing them to go with her plan, giving them no independence, providing them with no compliments and refusing their ideas. She raised her children in a way that “I will never accept your different value and thought. You will have to comply with my expectation.” In the end, the daughter and son fought back by giving up school when they were respectively at grade 4 and grade 2 of primary school. This most expensive and painful lesson taught her that:

  1. We have to accept different ideas of others.
  2. We have to accept the truth that we are not always right.
  3. We have to give more compliments than complaints.
  4. We must not object freedom of thinking and acting.
  5. We have to offer other people with more benefit or as equal to us.
  6. We have to be willing to listen to others without rejecting their comments.
  7. Accept their new ideas and allow them to pursue.

These 7 lesson-learned has become her business philosophy as well as principles in taking care of staff members just like her own children. Since then, Ms. Yukie KOMAI, as the President, has become more attentive in developing her employees which she regard as top priority. Staff members are now happier with smile and laughter. They have become much livelier than in the time of her father. From a company started with only 10, now it has more than 50 employees. From a firm with negative business outcome, to one of the most continuously growing company in both sales and profit making it the number one small food packing machine manufacturer in Japan.(More interview details can be found in Target Magazine issue 172 December 2020 at public and private offices, libraries, restaurants, cafes, Kaogee cafe and many more places in Vientiane or membership inquiry call 021 216 666)
