Five negative attitudes to be avoided in the workplace
In this issue of Target magazine, we present five negative attitudes to be avoided in the workplace so that you are not looked down upon by your coworkers:
- Being authoritarian: Most people do not appreciate being ordered around or pushed about by their superiors. It makes lower ranking employees do things without prior agreement. In reality, however, this is a common trait among bosses. Many feel that their position gives them the right to act as they please to the extent that they complete forget about their subordinates. In doing this, they lose the trust, confidence, and ultimately, the respect of those working under them.
- Working for person gain: Everyone who works naturally wants to be remunerated for their daily work but thinking only of how much you can make, your salary, and your bonuses and grumbling when you don’t get what you want will make others view you in a negative light. Although we may be working in order to earn a salary, we do not always have to value our work in monetary terms. The best workers are those who focus on doing the work in hand to the best of their ability, achieving the optimum results, and applying their skills to doing what they love. These are qualities which earn the confidence of your coworkers.
- Doing just enough to get by: Employers get bored and tired of people like this as they fail to put their heart into their work. They just do what they must to make it to the end of the day and go home. While they may succeed in completing their work, their coworkers will notice that they don’t really care or see their work as being important. Such employees will eventually become irresponsible and careless with their work and it should come as no surprise to them if they are not assigned the important jobs.
- Laziness: Everyone likes an easy life but taking it to the point that you are unwilling to tire yourself out when faced with a heavy workload and complaining about it or refusing to do it does not make you a very useful team player. Dealing with heavy workloads does not have to mean that you have to work round the clock but it is the nature of most professions that there will be periods where you have to face up to challenges, overcome obstacles, and solve important problems. In doing this, you can learn some magnificent lessons which can make you stronger. If you are unwilling to break a sweat, then it will be difficult for you to grow.
- Cliquishness: The most annoying thing in the work place is when people form into cliques and gossip about one another, bringing people’s personal lives into their professional work. Such behavior is unhelpful both to oneself and to the company and if office politics reach the stage where people are arguing amongst themselves, work will not be performed efficiently and may not even be completed at all.
