Greetings dear and cherished readers, It is an honor and pleasure for me to have this exciting opportunity to write an article about how to raise children on prestigious Target Magazine. Dated back 30 years ago when I was 10 years old, my parents raised me in a natural way giving me freedom in thinking and expressing myself. My parents would allow me to go play at a green rice field and fish pond, catch grasshopper and play kite at a spacious landscape. Sometimes, I went to play at my friends` house. We did many activities, such as run and catch, rubber rope jumping, cross jumping, slipper throwing and flip tamarin seeds which were common among children at that time. Because I had a chance to run around with friends at a green, spacious field when I was a child, I was not afraid of learning new things, making mistakes, being creative and nurturing friendship with others in a consistent manner. Thanks to my parents for allowing me to live my life closely to the nature and a group of friends.
30 years passed by so quickly like water that will never flow back. Come to think of it, I cannot believe that I am 40 years old now. It is unfortunate and pity to see the area that was once my playground was replaced with big houses and roads. At the moment, I have two beloved sons with the oldest aged 7 and the youngest aged 1. I will never be able to raise my children just like my case because the time has changed, hence the teaching and nurturing methods will have to be altered. My sons are my inspiration to keep working hard and dedicated in order to prepare them for the digital era when it is full of advanced science and technology. Prof. Stephen Hawking, genius in physiology and cosmology, said that “children these days live their life around science and technology more than children in the past. It is best to allow them to learn and get to know about science and technology at a very young age.”
I agree with the saying of Prof. Stephen Hawking. We are living in the era of Artificial Intelligence or AI, a future robotic technology which will play a crucial role in manufacturing, service industry and other sectors. Robots will take away our jobs and they have a high possibility of surpassing human intelligence. There have been many cases which proved that robots are extremely smart. For example, in 2016, a robot named AlphaGo developed by Google was able to beat the Korean World Champion, Lee Sedol, in a game of Goh 4 to 1. With this in mind, in order to raise my children and prepare them for the digital era so that they can become future leaders and compete with robots, there are 3 main factors I need to consider:
- Teach your children to care for others
Mr. Jack Ma, founder of the giant e-commerce empire called Alibaba, once said that “robots have machine, human have heart.” Teaching children so that they can compete with AI, parents should not only development their IQ and EQ, but also Love Quotient for them which is very important. They should be taught how to care for others and create social value by giving and sharing for society and community. This particular thing is what distinguish us from robots. If human get to do something they love or for their loved one, they will possess an incredible amount of power that nothing will be able to withstand. Human were born from love, grow up with love and are willing to do anything for love.
- Teach your children to be creative
Creativity is what enables human to design and invent AI. When speaking of creativity, the word “Thinking Design” should pop up in our mind which refers to the ability to design and learn something in a creative way. One does not have to be talented from birth. With creativity, it can create new values and solve social problems. It makes us stand out and stay on top of AI. According to Mr. Tom Kelley, the king of creativity and an author of “Creative Confidence,” if you would like to teach your children to be creative, you should train them by having them practice their Creative Muscle all the times. It means that you should teach them to think outside the box and always try to come up with new things that have never existed in this world before. If you notice that your children think and behave differently from others, for instance paint on the wall, you should not immediately stop them by yelling in anger. If your children say that they will invent a gasoline-free flying car, you should not discourage them by saying that they cannot do it and they should stop thinking about it. What is important here is to keep encouraging and assuring their confidence by saying that what they think is amazing and possible. Please say that parents will always believe in them.
Teaching children to be creative is not to force them to do something that parents want and enforce strict rules upon them, but rather give them freedom of thinking as much as possible.
- Encourage the usage of right brain to help your children process information more effectively
The 5.0 digital era is when people can access to information on the Internet quickly via mobile phone, computer and other electronic devices. However, the information available is Big Data which requires time and effort in screening out for the best and most effective information. I think that only those with smart brain who can think fast will be able to screen out data quickly and efficiently. Training children to think, learn and process information fast will help stipulating their right brain. The right hemisphere is used to create creative ideas. It is a genius part helping us receiving and processing large information quickly turning it into our memory which will last in our mind forever. It is also a part that deals with quick math and complicated calculation.
There are numerous ways in stipulating children`s right brain, for instance to feed information and teach your children with golden cards. Information feeding and teaching using golden cards has to be done quickly and effectively. 1 photo or 1 word will be shown faster than 1 second. Why does it have to be that fast? If you would like your children to think fast with full of creativity, we have to feed them information quickly i.e. if we want a quick output, we have to feed an input fast. In addition, large information has to be fed, for example when sharing data in a form of golden cards and words to children, the number should be at least 300 words and pictures.
This is the 3 techniques in teaching and preparing your children for the 5.0 digital era so that they can survive in this modern society which will keep advancing further in the future.
