From a labor worker to a business owner.
When speaking of Mr. Kia Ousithideth or “Brother Kia,” many of you might have heard of him, especially those who live in Khampanae and Pakuay Village, Savannakhet Province. They appreciate him highly due to his contribution of several billion kip of personal wealth towards the development and improvement of living conditions for several hundreds of lives in the area. He helped them escape poverty, and be able to settle down with a permanent home, stable job and assets, while being able to access educational and health service more conveniently.
Mr. Kia Ousithideth told us about his story back in the day when he struggled for himself and his family before reaching today. Back in 1964, he had to flee from war and hide in deep forest along the Lao-Vietnamese border in Sepon District, Savannakhet Province, due to fear of being bombed by airplanes. He was 7 years old back then and had to study in the forest until he was 10 (primary 4th grade), while his parents farmed for a living. In 1974 when the war ceased, he moved to Thakhong Village, Sepon District, with his family opening a small retail shop. In 1976, he moved to the city center of Savannakhet Province to work as a labor worker. In 1978, he launched a business roasting coffee beans for trading companies in the province, while delivering supplies from the city center to merchants in Sepon. In 1985, he offered a service of producing ethanol for the Provincial Hospital and operated a pig farm at the same time. In 1987, he established a wood processing business for furniture making before expanding it larger in 1990 as the KM4 Wood Processing Factory. In 1989, he bought a public ice factory which forced him to abandon the wood processing business in 1996 in order to focus primarily on improving the ice factory based on criteria agreed with the Government. The ice factory was changed into Lomakham Drinking Water and Ice Factory later. Currently, the factory is capable of producing drinking water up to 570,000 liter and ice of 300,000 kg per day. On April 5, 2014, the factory was the first in the Lao PDR to receive the ISO22000. In 2006, he founded the Oudomsap Sandstone and Oudomsap Road-Bridge Construction Company in 2010.
Mr. Kia added that he has started doing business from small to large emphasizing on quality production and sustainable family business. During the past decades, he has been creating not only business value, but social value through assistance extended to local communities.
During the past several years, he received a number of awards from the Party and Government. On November 25, 2015, he was decorated with the National Medal honoring his excellent role as a development practitioner.
From 2016-2018, Lomakham Factory in collaboration with the Party and Government provided help to eradicate poverty for villagers in Khampanae and Pakuay Village, Champhone District, Savannakhet Province, through its business operation and CSR programs.
–What is an inspiration for contributing your personal wealth of several billions in helping poor people?
As mentioned above, he has been taught by his family since his young age to always appreciate help from family, relatives and teachers. He was also equipped with the spirit of patriotism and sacrifice reflected in his true nature. When he is capable of helping others, he has never hesitated to offer hands to those who are in need. According to a letter from Champhone District Governor agreed by the Provincial Governor dated December 16, 2015, he decided to take part in helping villagers (beggars) of Khampanae and Pakuay Village, Champhone District, Savannakhet Province, to escape from poverty.
On January 1, 2016, a memorandum was signed with Champhone District to provide an initial help to 27 families (for a period of one year). The memorandum for the 2nd phase was then signed on January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2018 to help two villages in 3 years covering 111 families or more than 600 villagers worth 15 billion kip donated by Mr. Kia’s family. In addition, there was also a contribution of totally 7 billion kip from the Party, Government, and both domestic as well as foreign shops.
Helping villagers in two villages during the past 3 years has assisted villagers to shift from mobile plantation to settled agriculture. This was done by involving a team of project consultants to work practically with Mr. Kia in the local area. Every day, the team would visit villagers in each family to discuss and help them solve problems. They engaged in multi-tasks in order to quickly create benefits, while building trust and satisfactory feeling for people in shifting towards new method of making a living. They avoided a short-term aid, while concentrating on building basic infrastructure for things that are necessary for villagers to support their settled and sustainable agriculture.
On April 29, 2019 at the big conference hall of the Savannakhet Provincial Office, a meeting to summarize and evaluate the involvement of Lomakham Drinking Water and Ice Factory in the 3-year poverty eradication project for villagers (beggars) in Khampanae and Pakuay Village, Savannakhet Province, was held. The meeting found that the project was highly effective in helping people creating their own wealth which had never happened with any family before. People have settled permanently, while increasing their productivity through knowledge of plantation, livestock, trade and advertisement derived from their access to educational and health service. More villagers are now believing in Buddhism and perform Buddhist practices in temples regularly. Currently, people are enjoying better living conditions.
–How do you feel about the 2019 ASEAN Development Award for SME in the Lao PDR and “the National Development Practitioner” Title of Honor bestowed to you for your contribution to social development? And to date, how many awards and decorations you have received from the Government?
During the past numerous decades, I have been able to establish and retained ownership for several family businesses which have also given me opportunities to help society. With such contribution, I have received many awards from the Party and Government. I feel really proud that the Party, Government and organizations at all levels appreciate my contribution. These awards serve as my achievement and honor which will last forever for my family.
The SME’s social contribution award is given to the family business operated with a focus on sustainability, personnel development, product standard and quality in lines with its CSR programs. I received this award because I had a chance to get cooperate with the Party and Government in addressing poverty issue for people of 2 villages, namely Khampanae and Pakuay Village, Champhone District, Savannakhet Province. My team and I put our maximum effort with pure heart into helping people and concerned authorities without any hidden agenda. What I have done in the past can well reflect my true identity.
Apart from the 2019 ASEAN Award, I was also decorated with the National Medal for Development in 2015 in addition to other classes of awards. He added further that on November 2, 2019, he will attend the Asian Business Awards (ABA) Ceremony hosted in Bangkok, Thailand, before receiving another award for “the development practitioner who helps eradicating poverty for people” in Naypyidaw, Myanmar, on November 8, 2019.
–Can you speak of your pride in helping people out of poverty, while, at the same time, being able to take care of yourself?
I feel proud to be able to help the Party and Government. I would like to confirm once again that my social involvement has been carried out with pure heart without any hidden agenda. What I have done which yielded tangible outcomes can well reflect my true identity. We have been able to achieve our objectives and goals of 18 tasks as agreed. Looking back to the past 3 years, I truly feel and clearly see that people are changing positively in terms of their perspective and lifestyle ready to move forward and escape from poverty. Mobile plantation (begging) for living will be left in the past.
–Can you share your working mottos as a lesson-learned for young business people
Here are my working mottos: 1. you must love in what you do; 2. quality is the top priority; and 3. strive hard to acquire something. Most importantly, please keep in mind of these 4 things: hardwork, patience, save and honesty.
