GOTEDDY a Lao hot start-up winning the recent Lao ICT Award 2019.

Today, we have an opportunity to know about a new business or start-up so called “GOTEDDY” which offers food delivery service to customers who can make order from restaurants throughout Vientiane Capital via a mobile application. Despite being very new which has been launched for only 4 months, the service is booming with a number of users increased by 15% monthly. Recently, the application received the Lao ICT Award 2019 to guarantee their success.

Firstly, Target Magazine would like to introduce the founder and President of the company. His name is Mr. Pasong Lattana or Song aged 24 years old. He graduated
from secondary school in Singapore, and graduated University from the UK with a plan to obtain a Mater’s Degree. The idea of GOTEDDY came up in his mind when he was overseas. He was so used to trading things online through a mobile phone via mobile applications which was very convenient, especially when ordering food. When he came home, he had to go out or call a restaurant to place an order and a delivery service which is complicated, especially when giving them his address. He felt that this does not suit people of his generation so called Gen Y. This group grew up with the “Internet” and modern “technology” who will have high purchasing power in the future. With this problem that Gen Y people are commonly facing, it became a business opportunity for Mr. Pasong that he later invented the application titled “GOTEDDY” to tackle the issue.

Mr. Pasong started his business with passion of wanting to see Lao people have a good application to use which can help making their life easier. He also used his
experience as a user of this kind of service overseas together with his business knowledge, despite having no “IT” expertise, to establish the company with his own IT crew who assisted him in creating “GOTEDDY.” The application was built by combining strengths found in applications developed in the USA, Asia and Europe.

Although this start-up was founded with passion and concentration on helping customers solve their issue, new “technological-based” business will always face with challenges. He said that: “seeking IT experts is so difficult. Nowadays, many skillful ones do not want to work for others, but for their own business. It took us quite a while to find a proper team.” Moreover, the firm also had some issues in training 40 of our delivery staff, especially for them to know how to use a new “platform” which is complicated due to its various processes. They were trained from how to receive an order, inform ordering status all the way to deliver the order to the designated location using the GPS system.

Finding business partners i.e. restaurants to be linked with the application is also challenging. At first, whenever our team contacted them, they always refused our business offer due their lack of understanding in how this technology can help them increasing their sales and customers. They failed to see how the technology would make it possible plus that they had to pay a percentage commission based on a purchasing order to GOTEDDY as a service fee. In terms of marketing, the company has been promoting their brand awareness “offline” via delivery motobikes going around the city with a GOTEDDY logo depicting a rocket-riding bear in white and navy blue. For online marketing, advertisements and campaigns on social media have been launched regularly in the forms of food and delivery discount promotion. With that, the “application” has been downloaded 20,000 times already by users aged between 18 and 24. Many restaurants who refused the firm at first started to change their mind and become a partner with GOTEDDY eventually.

Even though users of GOTEDDY nowadays are mostly young people or niche-market customers, the company is planning to expand its business range to mass market in the future, for instance office employees, parents and others. They will also expand their service area covering Champasack Province and foreign countries, such as Myanmar and Cambodia. In the meantime, they are searching for qualified partners.

On this occasion, Mr. Pasong also left some positive recommendations to those who are dreaming of running their own start-up that “those who want to run a
start-up must begin with passion. Without such feeling, the business will not be possible. Start-up business is highly unexpected. There is no guarantee whether
your business will gain market acceptance or not. Therefore, the owner will always face the risk of failure. Despite that, you should never “give up” before reaching your goal. Finally, you have to “figure out” what can your product or service do to bring positive impact upon people.”

Lastly, Mr. Pasong would like to urge the Government to further promote start-up entrepreneurs by issuing a business license and implementing supporting policies
specifically related to start-ups, while helping the business increasing social awareness by establishing an association for new entrepreneurs and organizing start-up contests regularly.
