Lao Textile Museum promotes cultural preservation

Handicraft production which is locally traditional and unique has been developed both in terms of patterns and skills. In recent years, numerous Lao entrepreneurs received several regional handicraft awards. With that, the Government decided to promote this area of business based on the country’s potential, tradition, lifestyle and local uniqueness in order to support the commercialization of local handicraft goods in lines with the tourism promotion and job creation. Because of this, Target Magazine would like to present to you one of many activities in handicraft in this issue.

Taking this opportunity, let us get to know Mr. Hansana Sisane, President of Kanchana the Beauty of Lao Silk, who founded the Lao Textile Museum. Previously, Mr. Hansana had been working in journalism for several years. Back in 1990 when Laos entered into a new change, he started to operate a family business with the very first company engaging in silk weaving and sale of traditional silk clothes named ‘Kanchana Lao Silk.’ The firm came up with beautiful, thoroughly made, quality and elegant design of goods. Apart from this, Mr. Hansana has also gotten involved in social works since
then. Currently, Mr. Hansana is holding a title with the executive board of the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry together with his presidential position for the Lao Handicraft Association. In addition, he was duly appointed as the central committee member of the Lao Front for National Development.

Speaking handicraft, Mr. Hansana emphasizes that this business area is highly important for the national economy as it contributes largely to job creation for community. It enables Lao people to earn and improve their living conditions. Moreover, handicraft help attracting tourists to Laos, especially the Lao traditional textile that tourists visiting our country would like to experience themselves in hand-weaving and coloring which has evolved through histories of Lao lifestyles full of beautiful culture and traditions passed down from the old generations.

In fact, Laos is rich of weaving methods and techniques. Some techniques are difficult to apply, and take more time and effort. Thus, many people doing this business choose to abandon some of these traditional wisdoms to use modern machines instead in order to save time and create more profits.

Because of that, in 2003, Mr. Hansana decided to open his own Lao Textile Museum with an inspiration to preserve the Lao traditional weaving methods as a cultural heritage for the new generation to proudly present to the world. The museum is operated in a wooden-style house constructed based on the Lao architectural design. It is divided into sections, such as a room showcasing 100-year-old silk clothes of different ethnic groups. Inside, there is a weaving and coloring demonstration for visitors to practice as well. To promote a comprehensive learning, he later established the Laos-Japan Cultural Center, Lao food learning center and textile school. To date, it can be seen that the Lao Textile Museum has become a new attraction as a cultural place for learning about Lao traditional silk and weaving methods.

According to Mr. Hansana, there are on average 3,000-5,000 per year visiting the museum. Most of them are from Japan, Australia, USA and some European countries. Just recently, the place started to receive higher number of visitors from China, while Thai and Vietnamese tourists still represent the lowest proportion among others.

The museum is currently facing with a problem in terms of language barrier. They would like to have a variety of choices for visitors, not only English. Apart from this, Mr. Hansana would like to urge the Government to invest further in creating new tourist attractions, not only museums but something like cultural village, cultural club, handicraft village, organic farm, sport village and traditional medical village for instance.
Mr. Hansana also takes this occasion to suggest those engaging in handicraft business that they should keep improving themselves by attending different activities hosted by the Lao Handicraft Association, especially training on various topics which will benefit their handicraft business. What’s more, these activities are a great opportunity for them to form a network with other entrepreneurs to exchange lesson-learned and help each other solve any problem.

Mr. Hansana would like to welcome anyone who is interested in the Lao Textile Museum, especially tourism companies, hotels and restaurants that they can form a network of cooperation with an aim of attracting visitors. He also requests concerned sectors and people in general to help promotingthe museum so that many people can visit for the sustainability of Lao culture and expansion of Lao tourism. He also welcomes all couples wanting to shoot their pre-wedding photos in a setting reflecting Lao traditional identity. This museum is the most suitable place for such purpose surrounded by the environment of an old wooden house, rice barn and orchid garden. In addition, The Lao Textile Museum also hosts weddindgs and banquete. In the future, the museum plans to develop further and come up with new activities to accommodate higher number of visitors.

Lao Textile Museum opens every day from 9:00 to 16:00. It is located in Nongtha Tai Village, Chanthabouly District, Vientiane. More information including contacts can be found on google searching Lao Textile Museum.
