“do not care about the world?”
Greeting dear readers! What I would like to discuss with you this time has nothing to do with the global warming issue, rather characteristics of Lao people which need to be improved. Wanting the country to advance, the people need to change first.
Definitely, there is a reason for me to tell the following story. I had a chance to read an old book written in 1974 titled “Lao people like to have fun, eat, take things easy and concern nothing about the world.”
Some readers might be confused on how this relates to their working style. I would like to refer to the suggestion by Mr. ThonglounSisoulith, Prime Minister, of wanting Lao people to change their production method from only producing rice enough for personal consumption to producing rice for trade increasing their savings. People should stop consuming all of their earnings without caring about the future thinking that they can make more next month. What is even worse, some people consumes more than they make which is a negative characteristic leading to a disastrous future full of debts and other issues.
Some people say that they should not worry a thing because Laos is full of natural resources. There are fishes in the water, rice in the field. Once finishing their work at the rice field, they just lie down in a hut, while enjoying a gentle wind. That can be a case in the past. Currently, as natural resources are depleting with the environmental conditions keep changing, if we do nothing, the country will stop being developed. We should “abandon the relaxing attitude when working towards being more enthusiastic.”
Let me get back to our main topic of discussion that the characteristics of taking things easy and not caring about the world will result in our ineffective work performance in terms of quantity and quality. Those with a working attitude of taking things slow and easy are less likely to advance in their professional career. We are living in the highly competitive era both in terms of quantity and quality, and not only domestically, but internationally. Nobody would like to invest in a country where people lack energy and enthusiasm, where they only care about salary, don’t you think? The reason that investors decide to invest in Vietnam and China is that people in both countries are highly enthusiastic. This is another factor for investment decision.
Therefore, we have to change from a person who cares nothing about the world to the one who thinks carefully about the future as well as how to help others. If we cannot help, just do not be a burden for others by being someone who likes to take things easy and eventually becomes selfish. For that reason, we have to live our life and work in compliance to regulations and laws strictly in order to contribute to social peace and order. Especially now that Lao population is reaching 7 million in number, if we do not respect laws, we will end up creating troubles for others and eventually creating social chaos.
Nevertheless, there is nothing worse than being lazy which will eventually make us fail to reach the bright future. Because of that, we should not stay in our comfort zone too long that it will not only make us lazy, but also make us lose interest in developing ourselves feeling that we know everything. We should never stay still without advancing further and stop complaining that it is because of our fate that we are not successful. This is the “downside of being someone who cares nothing about the world.”
