It is well-known that Vientiane High School
does not allow students to bring smartphones to school
First of all, I would like to introduce myself. I am Kabkeo Thammavong, a new writer at Target magazine, so our readers can get to know me. In my first article at Target, I would like to kick off with human development because the youth of today are the future of the nation and I would especially like to discuss smartphones, which are considered to be high-tech devices to make our lives more convenient but if we look at the other side of the coin, there lies a hidden danger which can affect students due to their addictively magnetic nature, which is so tantalizing for students that they become so drawn in that they lose their concentration towards their quest for knowledge if we miss out on the fact that we need a right and suitable way to use them.
It has been on the grapevine that Vientiane High School is to ban the use of smartphones by students from Secondary Grades 1 to 7 while at school starting from 31 August 2018, the first day of the 2018-2019 school year. This is the first school to initiate such a scheme, which is worrying parents and guardians as to the safety of their children as they will have no way of contacting them. There is no greater need to panic than the social media trend, such as Facebook, however, which is a means of spreading information rapidly at the leisure of the user. There is much discourse and wide variety of opinions – some are in support of the ban while some are against, some of whom simply lie in wait to jump in and find something negative to say.
Vientiane High School Principal Ms. Viengsouvanh Phaxaysombath clarifies the ban and explains further that “We have to meet halfway – we still permit students to use brick phones, which means they can stay in contact with their parents, and the school has landline telephones, which are available for the students to use free of charge when they have something to talk to their parents or guardians about and if students want additional information to use in their studies, the school has a modern computer room, which is open to students.
The reason we are banning students from taking smartphones to school is because an assessment of last year showed that students are overusing them to the extent that their grades in certain subjects are falling and they are falling short of the school targets.
We are certainly not alone in banning students from carrying smartphones at school as although we may be the only school in Laos to do this, ordinary schools across the globe are seeking ways to deal with the danger of the smartphone epidemic. Despite the concerns of parents and guardians, as soon the students sit down in class, they immediately reach for their smartphones and refuse to study.
France is even putting a blanket ban on students under the age of fifteen taking smartphones into class, which is to enter into force in September 2018, so we are no different from France in doing this on the first day of this school year.
I still remember the day when I was visiting a close friend in Vientiane Capital. As soon as we reached home, their children rushed up to their parents. I assumed that they were going to ask from a snack or something from their parents but to my surprise, all they wanted was to play games on their parents’ smartphones. I was disturbed when I asked why they were giving their children their smartphones to play with at such a young age but they simply replied that it was so that their children would be able to keep up with the modern era with respect to high-tech from a young age. I was so shocked at this answer that I was lost for words.
I believe that there are still many parents who think like this – that giving their smartphones to their children to play with is a good thing – and they will always give the excuse that it was so their children would understand IT from a young age but in fact, it is more because they want something to take their children off their hands while they – the parents – have fun with their friends.
Second richest person in the world Bill Gates, despite being the founder of one of the world’s IT giants, does not allow his own children to use smartphones, which he himself created, which is strange seeing as parents and guardians in Laos are worried that their children will be unintelligent and behind the times with respect to high-tech while the producer of these devices is more worried that his children will not get to learn about other important and essential things in life. If children spend all their time on their smartphones, they will miss out on other essential life skills when they can easily learn about IT when they are older”.
