British businesses are growing in the Lao PDR
Mr. John Pearson, British Ambassador to the Lao PDR, gives us the honor to interview him for the July issue of Target Magazine. He will inform us about our bilateral relations and cooperation, British business growth in the Lao PDR and their future goals. He will also touch upon aids extended to the Lao PDR during the previous years.
What kind of work does the UK do in Laos?
The British Embassy is in Vientiane to promote British interests in Laos. This includes promoting British businesses selling their goods and services in Laos, and there are many different British companies who have been very successful at this. For example the Intercontinental Hotel Groups, who run the five star hotel Crowne Plaza Vientiane, will be opening another hotel, the Holiday Inn, sometime in the near future. Prudential are very active in the insurance market, and Ernst and Young provide professional services, specialising in tax and auditing. New to the market, but also doing very well, is Pingu’s English; a primary level English school owned by the UK’s Linguaphone Group, who teach English to young children in Laos using a penguin as the lead character.
Like all other Embassies, we help British nationals who need assistance. This has been crucial during the Covid-19 crisis, when the Embassy helped around 150 stranded British nationals return home from Laos. But an important part of our work is also helping Laos to develop as a country. We have therefore provided over US$13m in recent years to remove unexploded ordnance from large areas in Laos, and help build capacity in Laos’ UXO sector. Another US$2m per year is being spent for work on anti-microbial resistance, which seeks to ensure that medicines are able to treat infectious diseases effectively, both for human and animal health.
Working with the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, we are helping the Lao National Assembly improve the standard of legislation and run a petition service so members of the public can convey their concerns. And as you would expect for the United Kingdom, education is also a large part of our work. We want more Lao students at British universities, studying at British schools, and learning English. After all, English is the true international language.
