Germany is one of the most important development partners for the Lao PDR.
In this issue, we have the honor to interview Mr. Jens Peter Lutkenherm, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Lao PDR, who will brief us about the friendly relations on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between Laos and Germany which was celebrated just last year. Moreover, he will also explain about the assistance extended from the German to the Lao Government including the future cooperation between the two countries.
Lao PDR and Germany established their bilateral relations on January 31, 1958 which reached the 60th anniversary in 2018. During the past 60 years, the two states have been actively cooperating and providing supports to each other bilaterally and multilaterally. In Laos, the German Government put great emphasis on two priorities in its assistance, namely technical cooperation through the German Society for International Development (GIZ) and financial cooperation via the German Development Bank. Such cooperative acts were planned out in correspondence with the general objectives of the socio-economic development plan of the Lao Government concentrating particularly on the rural development, vocational education, sustainable economic development, human resource development, environmental preservation, infrastructure development and public-private business promotion. Furthermore, Germany has also extended its assistance to Laos through other international organizations, such as the European Union and Mekong River Commission.
